of support for the vulnerable categories of refugees
Following situation at the field, where around 7,300 refugees and asylum-seekers were counted in Serbia during January 2017. whit over 6000 (i.e. 82%) accommodated in 16 government shelters, many exceeding their capacities.
At the same time, 1.200 refugees predominantly male, including 250-300 boys, remained sleeping rough in the city center refusing to go to official governmental shelters. Humanitarian agencies provided counselling, referrals and transport to accommodation in governmental centers, registration with the police, child protection and medical services.
Situation wasn’t good especially taking into consideration weather condition where temperature goose under -10 degrees and more over a night.
Closer of “Balkan rout” is just decreased daily number of people who entry Serbia, but this flow isn’t stopped. Every day we have between 20 – 30 new refugees come in Serbia, and this is drop form previously 100-150 before this bad winter condition.
Most help was needed for the people in Belgrade city center, but also for those accommodated in governmental shelters, as their capacity was exceeded.
Thought our work daily we identified several cases of urgent needs. It’s mostly needs for winter clothing, footwear, basic medicament but also external mobile charger and credit supplement for mobile phones as that is only way for refugees to keep contact with their families.
This project will provide basic needs for the refugees providing urgent support for those identified by our mobile teams, but also with support of partner organizations at the field. Also, we will support governmental shelters with necessary goods.
